Changing Your Mindset: From Blocked to Inspired
Let’s face it: waiting for the perfect moment to feel inspired is like waiting for your coffee to brew while staring at the pot—it takes forever, and you might just end up frustrated. I learned this the hard way when I decided to take up painting. Armed with my brand-new canvas, brushes, and an assortment of vibrant colors, I plopped myself down in front of my easel, ready to create a masterpiece worthy of the Louvre. My expectations were sky-high, and you can probably guess what happened next.
Instead of painting, I stared blankly at that pristine canvas, my mind racing with self-doubt. “What if I ruin it?” “Am I even good at this?” But instead of letting fear paralyze me, I grabbed a brush and splattered some paint on the canvas. I was just going to go wild! Before I knew it, I was creating abstract swirls and splashes that made me giggle with joy. I wasn’t creating a work of art; I was playing. And guess what? That playful energy led me to create a piece I actually loved! It wasn’t a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it was mine, and that felt pretty amazing.
By reframing my approach to creativity—from a rigid expectation to an open, playful mindset—I found that inspiration was everywhere. Instead of searching for that elusive spark, I learned to create my own by engaging in playful experimentation. So the next time you feel blocked, consider changing your environment or activity. Go for a walk, try doodling, or even cook a new recipe. The key is to engage with something that sparks joy and lets your mind wander into uncharted territories.
Keeping the Creative Juices Flowing
Now that we’ve established that creativity is a muscle, how do we keep it flexing? Here are a few things I’ve discovered along the way:
Set Small Challenges: Try to create something small every day. It could be doodling, writing a haiku, or even taking a different route on your daily walk to spark new ideas. The key is to start small and build from there, gradually increasing the complexity of your creative endeavors as you become more comfortable.
Surround Yourself with Inspiration: Whether it’s art, music, books, or nature, find what inspires you and soak it in. Visiting a local art gallery or simply flipping through a magazine can ignite those creative fires. Make a habit of curating a list of things that inspire you—artists, musicians, writers—then dive into their work when you need a boost.
Engage with Others: Collaboration can be a game-changer. Talk to friends, join creative groups, or participate in workshops. Sharing ideas can lead to unexpected sparks of inspiration, and sometimes, just hearing someone else’s perspective can help you see your own ideas in a new light.
Keep a Journal: Write down your thoughts, doodles, or any flashes of inspiration you encounter. You never know when a random idea might blossom into something amazing later on. Journaling can also help you track your creative journey, making it easier to identify what inspires you and what doesn’t.
Embrace Failure: Remember, not every idea will be a hit, and that’s perfectly okay. Embrace the messiness of the creative process and learn from it. Some of the best lessons come from our so-called “failures.” Try to see each attempt as a stepping stone rather than a setback.
